Job Description

The position of Assistant Director (GIS Specialist) is an important role within an environmental protection organization in Punjab, Pakistan.

The specialist will be responsible for managing and overseeing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to help the organization better understand environmental data and support decision-making processes.

GIS plays a crucial role in the department by assisting in the collection, analysis, and visualization of environmental data that directly influences policy and environmental projects.

Key Responsibilities

1. GIS Administration and Management

Oversee and manage GIS systems and software to ensure they are optimized for the department’s needs.

Coordinate with other government departments and external agencies to integrate GIS data for comprehensive environmental assessments.

2. Map and Report Preparation

Create detailed and accurate maps that represent geographical data related to environmental issues.

Prepare charts, reports, and metadata that explain the GIS data, procedures, and requirements.

3. Complex Data Analysis

Conduct advanced GIS analysis, including the manipulation and interpretation of spatial and tabular data.

Perform geo-processing functions to generate meaningful insights from environmental data.

4. Custom GIS Applications

Develop and customize GIS applications as needed to support the department’s objectives.

Write, test, and execute custom programming solutions for GIS systems.

5. Collaboration and Coordination

Work closely with external professionals, including agencies and organizations, to share GIS data and maintain alignment with enterprise-level GIS standards and policies.

Ensure smooth data acquisition and the integration of external data sources into the GIS systems.

6. Additional Tasks

As required, take on other responsibilities assigned by senior management, such as the Deputy Director, Director, or Project Director.

Key Skills and Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

A BSc. in GIS from an HEC-recognized university, with at least 16 years of education in this field. A Master’s degree is also desirable.

5 years of post-qualification experience, with a proven background in GIS administration, ideally within a government or large private sector organization.

Core Skills

Proficiency in designing, creating, and analyzing GIS maps and data.

Ability to handle moderate to complex GIS analysis and geo-processing tasks.

Strong programming skills, with the ability to develop and execute custom GIS applications.

Excellent communication skills for creating reports, presentations, and collaborating with various stakeholders.
